Let me at it

Wow, deep learning is amazing. It’s incredible stuff and I love the brain-stretching aspects of thinking it through. Each day we take a step further, doing more than we could yesterday. (Which reflects fairly closely what’s happening in the field itself.)

We’re looking at analysing images, at natural language processing, at sentiment analysis. And who knows what tomorrow will bring.

But it’s also kind of scary, when the teacher tells you ‘we don’t really know what happens in there’. Oh, and mentions Geoffrey Hinton as ‘one of the founders of AI’ without also discussing why Hinton is sounding the alarm about the dangers of what he helped to develop! Oh, and I just discovered that Hinton’s middle name is Everest. How cool is that?

Oh, and I suspect I’m like any data science student in that I’m bored stiff with movie reviews, housing prices and iris petals. I can’t wait to get out in the world and okay with some real data!
